Does Greener Shingles Work?

Every homeowner and business owner wants their house or building to be protected for as long as possible. They do not want to have to worry about whether their roof is going to fall to shambles or start leaking at a moment’s notice. As a roof’s lifespan nears the end, it is hard not to worry about these types of issues. However, with a product like Greener Shingles, you can start putting your worries aside for a few more years.

Greener Shingles adds an extra 5-15 years to your roof. It is a USDA certified biobased product that replaces lost oils and maintains shingle life. Just like many other things in life, you want to know some background information about a product to ensure your investment is worthwhile. Part of the background information you want to know is whether a product has been proven to do the job it is being advertised to do.

Greener Shingles is a lab-tested product that any homeowner and business owner can count on to rejuvenate their roof.

Prove It!

In the past, rejuvenators have not been used very much in the asphalt roofing industry. In the beginning, its use was limited to conventional hot-mopped built-up roof. Over time, there have been multiple tries to restore/maintain rejuvenated asphalt shingle roofs. Most recently, asphalt rejuvenation has gotten more national attention in the paving industry. As a result of the increased attention, many new technologies have been introduced. Some of these products are progressing the rejuvenation/restoration technologies. It is also being theorized that these products will show effectiveness in the asphalt roofing industry.

To show that Greener Shingles does live up to its name, research was conducted to prove just how effective it is in rejuvenating asphalt shingle roofs.

The objective of the study was to perform and assess a selected screening evaluation to deliver an understanding on the Greener Shingles roof treatment. Greener Shingles was tested on aged 3-tab organic felt based asphalt shingles. A spray application was used followed by a five day ‘cure’ period. As a result, the evaluations strongly suggested that Greener Shingles roof treatment does provide benefits to main performance characteristics of asphalt shingles that are related to durability and potential extended lifespan. These main performance characteristics and their result are:

  • Flexibility: 23°C was improved.
  • Granular Adhesion: improved greatly from a granular loss of 1.11 g to a loss after treatment of 0.15 g. This was an 86% improvement.
  • Hail Impact: slightly improved by 6.6% post treatment. The improvement was lessened due to the type of shingle evaluated. That data indicates that hail impact would have a more significant improvement on FG mat-based shingles.
  • Fire Resistance ‘UL Speed of Flame’: The treated shingles showed a flame spread of 86 in 2 versus the untreated shingles that showed a spread of 144 in 2. Greener Shingles rejuvenator proved 40% better flame resistance versus untreated shingles.

Continuing the Research

The team at Greener Shingles is continuously conducting research and developing to ensure their top selling product continues to be even better. As a result of their continuing research, they were able to determine that on cedar shake shingles, which is a non-asphalt-based shingle, the moss and algae were smothered and washed off by rain. The color also changed closer to what it was 44 years earlier when they were installed. That’s proof right there!
